California's New Sales Tax Rates as of April 2009

Written By: Melissa C. Marsh, Esq., California Attorney, June 2009 Add to Favorites
Effective April 1, 2009, California’s base sales tax rate increased 1% to 8.25%. Yes this is not the tax rate paid by residents of California as each county has added percentages to the state’s base sales tax rate. In effect, most Californians are now paying an average of 9% on their retail purchases. In Los Angeles County the new sales tax rate is now a whopping 9.25%. In San Francisco, the new sales tax rate is 9.50% and in San Diego County the sales tax rate is now 8.75%.

More detailed information can be found in this 2009 publication titled, (California City and County Sales and Use Tax Rates (.PDF)), provided by California’s State Board of Equalization.

Not surprisingly, California's government still can't get a handle on its spending and is still considering expanding the sales tax to include services, and many other goods previously exempt. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is threatening to close down the government on July 1, 2009 if the state's legislature doesn't propose a new budget that significantly cut's spending instead of increasing fees and taxes on a multitude of items and services. The governor has also reiterated his support for a constitutional convention to overhaul state government.
