California Governor Jerry Brown on September 25, 2013, signed a bill into law that amends Labor Code §1182.12 and increases the state’s hourly minimum wage for all industries from $8.00 (presently) to at least $9.00 per hour effective January 1, 2014 and to at least $10.00 an hour by January 1, 2016. California employers should review their commissioned and salaried exempt pay rates to ensure their exempt from overtime employees pay continues to meet the minimum salary test.

Effective October 1, 2013, ALL employers are required to provide their employees with a "Marketplace Notice" setting forth how they might qualify for a premium tax credit/subsidy in the Exchanges and if health insurance is provided by the employer, the impact said employer coverage could potentially have on the employee’s eligibility for a subsidy. For a copy of the Model Notice put out by the U.S. Department of Labor, see Model Notice For Employers with Health Plans or Model Notice For Employers Without Health Plans.
